3. Don’t overdo it
Many first time college students think they can handle taking lots of college courses just because they took 6 to 10 classes in high school. Handling a large load of classes in college leaves little time for fun let alone studying. It is recommended for each class you take (3 credit hours) you need at least 6 to 9 hours of study. Most advisors will tell freshman that sticking to 4 hours is a good start but no more than 5 is recommended. With that being said you’ll need 24 to 36 hours’ worth of study time.
Mixing your most demanding subjects with some easier ones will help you on your quest to have fun. For instance your foreign language course, physical education requirement, and your humanities classes are not as strenuous as chemistry, math, and your history course. Taking courses that don’t have required reading mixed with some that do will help you free up time for fun. Pick classes that you think that you can manage simultaneously and do well in. Remember to meet a requirement there may be several different courses you can take; don’t always choose the hardest one.
